Welcome to this module
on comparison between scrum master and a
traditional project manager. After watching this video, you'll be able to
compare scrum master and traditional project
manager roles and contrast scrum master and traditional project
manager roles. A project manager and scrum
master have roles that in many cases require
the same set of skills. However, the focus and
definitions differ greatly. A project manager
is accountable for defining requirements,
building a scope, creating a Work Breakdown
Structure or WBS, and gaining approval
of the scope baseline. They manage predictive projects. A scrum master confirms
requirements with the team that are shared in the form of a user story by a product owner. The product owner
is responsible for generating the
initial user story. The scrum master enables
a sprint backlog, which breaks out
each user story into assignable tasks
produced by the team. They support adaptive products. Project managers build a
comprehensive schedule that must be approved by the sponsor and accepted by stakeholders. A scrum master, however, helps manage a sprint. This is a timebox iteration to produce a minimum
viable product or MVP, in a time-boxed 15 or 30
day iteration or period. Scrum masters also
help the team apply relative estimation
techniques to classify user stories by complexity
in the form of story points. The higher the story points, the more complex and involved
in the user story is. Project managers must
build a project budget. A scrum master may assist the product owner with
budgeting matters. The product owner is
responsible for the budget. Both project managers and scrum masters ensure quality
is built into a product. The project manager develops
a quality management plan. The scrum master ensures
that the team understands the definition of done
and works to achieve it. Project managers identify
and procure resources. They also assign roles
and responsibilities. A scrum master ensures that
the team self-organizes and identifies who will perform what tasks in the
sprint backlog. Project managers control
communication through a comprehensive communication
management plan. A scrum master ensures open communication through
the use of Kanban boards, burndown charts, and other documents available
to anyone on the team. Project managers develop a comprehensive risk
management plan and stakeholder register
to manage risk. A scrum master helps
the team assess user story risks to determine
the complexity of the work. The scrum master needs to
be capable of performing roles that differ from traditional project
management roles. Let's share a few examples. Project definition is critical. A project manager leads
the effort to develop a project charter and
project management plan that provides a roadmap
for the project. This plan is provided to the
team and drives execution. The plan defined
specific team roles and responsibilities that the project manager
ensures are accomplished. A scrum master on
the other hand, provides direction
to the team to determine what the
project will deliver. The scrum master helps the team define the project deliverables through the validation of user stories developed
by a product owner. They do not dictate the plan. Rather, they act as a coach and facilitator to ensure that the team self organizes and develops the plan in the
form of a sprint backlog. The project manager is the
voice of the customer. They work closely
with customers and key stakeholders to determine the executed product
or service state. The project manager leads the team's efforts to
develop the project scope, schedule, and cost baselines. The scrum master works with a product owner who
determines the requirements. The scrum master is focused on ensuring the team understands the requirements and is able to get the work
committed to done. A scrum master will ensure that the selected user stories are accomplished within the
timeframe of the sprint. Launch planning is normally accomplished by
the product owner. Both the project manager and scrum master perform issue
management functions. The project manager
solicit status, identifies issues, and ensures that they are
addressed in a timely manner. The scrum master identifies issues or blockers
on a daily basis, normally through
the facilitation of daily stand-up or
scrum meetings, and ensures that they are addressed as quickly
as possible. Both the project manager and scrum master needs to be
skilled in facilitation. A project manager must
facilitate status reviews, change meetings,
pre-baseline and baseline presentations,
and more. A scrum master needs
to facilitate and ensure that the team
participates in sprint planning, the sprint, demos,
and retrospectives. These are classified as
ceremonies and scrum. A final contrast regard to
the perception of the role. Project managers are normally recognized as essential to
the success of the business. Sponsors provide authority to plan and execute the product. A scrum master role may not be understood or
recognized as critical. A scrum master often needs
to be capable of influencing the team without authority to perform their required tasks. In this video, you learned
that project managers and scrum masters are similar in the way that they
define requirements, manage schedule,
budget, ensure quality, manage roles and
responsibilities, communication, and risks. Project managers
and scrum master different in project definition, determination of scope,
issue management, facilitation, and
role perception
